"Wow! New York! Just like I pictured it. Skyscrapers...an' everything!" - Stevie Wonder, Living For The City
As I settle in at my niece Kara's apartment in Astoria, Queens, I finally catch my breath, and realize that the first wave of butterflies has come and gone. Also the second wave. Also the third...
I start to reflect back on what has been one of those most incredible days, the kind I have only experienced in my life when traveling.
The time and distance had not been all that long or far, but the world I found myself in that night was so immeasurably different from the one I had left that morning, I was tempted to pinch myself to be sure it wasn't a dream.
That's right. After more than twenty years, I have arrived back in New York City!
Full disclosure: I have so much to do, and so many things planned, it will be an absolute whirlwind - a mixture of business, pleasure, family, friends, and oh yeah, a great many strangers. I'm sure my photography will end up being equal parts artist...and tourist. And knowing that does not bother me in the least.
In a strange way, there is so much to be nervous about, so many people, places, and things on my schedule this week, I find I am not even nervous.
There simply isn't time...
Alas, Stevie's Big New York Adventure has begun, and aside from all the graffiti being gone from the subway cars, the biggest difference since my last visit to New York many moons ago is the existence of social media.
So, in addition to my "serious" photography (courtesy of my DSLRs), I will do my best to remember to grab fun snaps with my phone as I go, then post them in fairly real-time on both my Facebook page as well as my Instagram feed. And yes, here as well...
Ok, gotta go! I need my sleep, because tomorrow...the city awaits!
