With my upcoming one-person gallery show - South Beach POParazzi - opening at the Leesburg Center For The Arts in three months, choices need to be made as to which of the many celebrities I've photographed will be part of the series and exhibition.
Especially important are the first two or three pieces, which need to be finished ASAP to be used for publicity and marketing purposes in the months to come.
Looking over the entire list of names, I feel it makes perfect sense to select actress Elizabeth Taylor as a showcase piece to represent the entire series.
You can read more about my new South Beach POParazzi series and show in last week's blog post here.
I have to be honest. Even in Miami, at the height of its incredible 1985-1995 "pop cultural renaissance" - led by the fashion and night club phenomena of South Beach with its flood of celebrities and entertainment personalities - I would have never guessed I'd have the opportunity to see and photography Liz Taylor up close and personal.
The two-time Academy Award-winning actress was arguably the most famous and glamorous Hollywood star of my parents' generation. Probably for the early part of my life as well. Over the course of her career, she became known almost as much for her tumultuous off-screen life - including eight marriages - as her tv and film roles.
New Times Miami newspaper wanted some shots of her, gave me the assignment, and credentialed me in.
It was one of those moments where, even considering my lack of enthusiam for photographing celebrities at events, made me shake my head and say, "Damn, this is pretty cool".
As I mentioned at the beginning of this blog post, it only seems fitting to make Elizabeth Taylor one of the showcase images of South Beach POParazzi.
She really does represent the star power that saturated South Florida during the time I was down there shooting these types of photos. And it's hard to argue she isn't the most famous individual I've ever photographed.
Although, if it came to a vote, Muhammad Ali would probably edge her out. :D
Obviously, the finished piece of Liz will look drastically different from any of these original photos, but you can be sure it will include the cute little dog in her lap.
Be sure to keep watching this blog and social media as I unveil the Liz Taylor image soon!
